Everyone knows that it is unfashionable to be overweight. What some people don't seem to understand is that it isn't always a choice. Some women diet until they are on the brink of a mental, emotional, and physical breakdown. Still, they don't ever achieve America's new perfect size - - two.
When I was growing up, I remember that models had real figures. While they were obviously still very slim and trim, they were by no means a size two. So I wonder exactly when anything above a size eight began to be considered "fat?" Where was I at the time? Why didn't I get the memo?
I was a size eight on my wedding day. At five foot, eight inches, I weighed around 115 pounds. I was by all standards of the time considering about 10 pounds underweight. In today's world, however, I would have been considered bordering on "fat." I'm no longer a size eight and I recognize that I could stand to lose more weight. I'm working on that. However, in the meantime, I still want to be fashionable. Unfortunately, the fashion world doesn't like to design fashions for real women; those above a size twelve. They seem to think that we "fatties" want to wear audacious colors, huge floral prints, and nothing but muumuus.

Today's plus size woman, for the most part, has come to accept herself for who she is. Rather than focusing on what she cannot be - - a size two - -she focuses on her brains and her heart. And because she is so confident and strong, she deserves to be treated with respect.

Even those designers who believe that anyone over size twelve doesn't deserve their respect, should recognize the size of the market they are neglecting. According to American Demographics, today's plus size market represents more than $25 billion a year. That equates to about one-quarter of all clothing sales. With those figures, one would think that some designer out there would want to solicit our business.

While the market is slowly changing, in the meantime, plus sized women have to figure out what to choose from the limited fashions available. So here are some tips to help my voluptuous sisters:

Looking Great At Any Size

No matter what your size, any woman can look beautiful if she knows a few tricks to help her look her best. Plus sized women are no exception. Stars like Delta Burke have shown us that a woman’s weight has nothing to do with her beauty. Knowing how to choose the right clothes, the right jewelr
y the right makeup, and the right hairstyle can transform any woman into a fashion diva!

When choosing a wardrobe, don’t follow the myth that all women over a size six should be covered in dark colors. If you look great in dark colors, fine! But don’t sentence yourself to wearing them all the time! However, choosing the same color in jackets and pants, no matter it’s hue or shade, can make a woman look slimmer. If you like khaki pants, and can choose a sweater or jacket in the same color khaki, the solid line of color all the way down the body creates a line that makes any body appear slimmer. You can wear a blouse in a contrasting color to add that needed bit of drama. Choose those colors that make you shine!

Remember, in choosing think vertical, not horizontal! Bold buttons down the front of a jacket, a long necklace, and vertical stripes are all ways of “thinking vertical”. These tricks draw the eye up and down, not side to side. Don’t let fashion myths keep you from wearing the colors that make you feel good. When you feel good, you’ll look good!

The one area I see many women making a huge mistake in dressing is size. If you wear a twenty, don’t try to squeeze into an eighteen. Just because they zip, doesn’t mean they fit!

Pants should drape, not wrinkle tightly across the back of the leg. Skirts should hang without tugging or hugging the underside of the bottom. Blouses should not gape open at the buttons. No matter what your size, choose cloths that fit. If you have any doubts, ask the opinion of the sales girl as to the fit. Wearing cloths that are too tight makes you look larger, not smaller.

Hair dressers can be a great source of ideas in choosing a hairstyle. Don’t think just because you have a round face, you have to go short. Long hair can look fabulous on any size woman and any age woman if it’s taken care of and styled to suit her face. Bangs, especially brushed to the
side, create an angle that slims a round face. Light feathering of hair around the face can soften the lines, too. But you see a hairstyle you love, don’t hesitate to try something new!

Jewelry on a plus-sized woman should be larger and bolder. Don’t think tiny chains and dainty bracelets. Bangle bracelets and chunky pendants help to balance out the total look. You are lucky to be able to wear bolder jewelry! It just doesn’t look good on a skinny model! But on us plus sized women…fabulous!

No matter what your size, you can look fantastic. The most important rule of all is to choose what makes you feel good. When you feel good, you will look great!

Pregnancy can be a hard time to consider fashion, and with maternity clothing that is so expensive, it can be hard on the pocket book too. But every woman should have at least one outfit she can wear during pregnancy that makes her feel comfortable and feel good about the way she looks while pregnant.

Here are a few hints to find that special outfit:

Certain styles look especially good on pregnant women such as A-line skirts, empire-waist dresses and tops, and pencil skirts paired with swingy shirts. If you are feeling really self-conscious about your changing body accentuate other parts of your body that you feel more comfortable with. To get people to notice your neck and shoulders choose a shirt with a ballet-cut or bateau neckline, or dress all in one color and add a scarf or some other stunning accessory. For working moms you will probably need to add two or three more skirts, another pair of dressy pants and a couple more shirts. This should be good for your initial shopping trip, then on later shopping trips try to buy things that will match what you already have, and try to limit what you get later to just one or two items. Another tip is to buy cloths that have a style that matches the style you wore before your pregnancy. You'll feel better about the way you look and be more likely to keep the clothing for your next pregnancy, which will save you money.
